One of the largest projects I’ve been working on this summer is the creation of a new intranet. SearchTec’s current intranet has all the necessary links and resources, but the format as a whole is unorganized. My task was to work with the various department heads to determine which resources needed to be updated and moved to the new intranet, and which resources could be removed entirely. In addition, I worked with Lance to determine a streamlined format for the site as a whole.
Using WordPress, I created several pages for corresponding sections of the company including, Production, Human Resources, and Training. Some of the files on the current intranet were extremely outdated. I compiled the new forms from different members of the staff and had them uploaded to our server. Once there, I could take the links to these items on our local server and put them into the new intranet on WordPress, giving each a corresponding button.
One of the biggest challenges I faced while working on this project was familiarizing myself with the WordPress editor that was installed on this site. It was fairly different from the one I was used to and took some trial and error before I finally started to feel comfortable with it. In addition to this, the amount of information that needed to be transferred was overwhelming at times. Many of the forms and resources concerned topics I haven’t had much exposure to, meaning oftentimes I had to reach out to various employees for help, which can be difficult in itself.
When I look at the project as a whole, I learned a lot about what goes into a company’s intranet, and also developed a real sense of comfort when working in WordPress.
